Fianna Fail out of the Traps on Government Formations, Fine Gael Talking to Sinn Fein?

RTE report that Fianna Fail have begun contacting independent TDs about the possibility of forming a government. The Progressive Democrats, Sinn Fein and Labour are meeting to outline their positions today. Liz McManus on the News at One has said the “doesn’t see it” happening that Labour would enter government without Fine Gael leading the [...]

Winning the Irish Election, Three Seaters were the Key

A very interesting fact jumped out from some notes I was making as I re-read the results from the weekend (yes, I am that sad). The victory for Fianna Fail lay in a number of vital areas. Primary among those was the manner in which they secure seats in three seat constituencies.

Best Option for the PD’s?

So despite my prediction that the PD’s would be unable to put Fine Gael or Fianna Fail in power, it looks like they could be putting both parties in. Go fig. But if the PD’s are going to chose a coalition which one is best.

Inter Party Government - Not As Unlikely As You’d Think

While Mr Ahern is certainly in pole position in the race to form a new Government, it would be unwise to rule out Mr Kenny’s opportunity at this early stage.
RTÉ have reported today that Jackie Healy-Rae, Finian McGrath and Tony Gregory have all been contacted by Fine Gael, but not yet by Fianna Fáil. [...]

Tony Gregory for Ceann Comhairle, Mary Harney for Health and Brian Cowen for Tanaiste?

This just came into the text but the technology is not playing ball with publishing it, so it gets a post.
“Congrats to Bertie with his unequivocal success. I always knew he would do it. I’m a prominent F.F member and i telling you now: Gregory will be Ceann Comhairle, Harney will keep health and Cowen [...]

Game on life in the old dog yet.

According to Breakingnews.ie. Enda Kenny is going to talk to the leaders of Labour Greens and PD’s to look at forming a government. They would have 79 seats and would need independents to make this work. But if they lock those parties in a group then that leaves FF if they are not going to [...]

Fianna Fail Preference for Smaller Party/Independent Combination

Listening to Bertie on Sky/RTE, he believes that independents will play a major role in government formation. This can hardly be interpreted any other way than a preference for smaller party (PD/Green) and independents as a path to government.
This was further nailed on by Conor Lenihan speaking to Sam Smyth who said that the [...]

Plus ca Change, Now a web-roundup too

There was an “appetite for change”, there was a platform for change but there were no votes for change. The fallout continues to baffle many from all around politics, the Fianna Fail vote share of 41.2% is a huge result for a government trying for a third term. The electorate seem to be prompting for [...]

Parlon in Trouble

To say the least. As one wag has put it “he might get transfers from Sinn Fein”.

Harney now nailed on as Minister for Health? Who for Minister for Justice

FF/PD merger or just a simple move back? Discuss.
thanks to niall’s comment for making me add the question, who will be Justice Minister?

The Election Narrative

So, exam done I re-emerge from the halls of academe to find a prospective bloodbath among the smaller parties. It is a major boost to the livelihoods of Fine Gael and to a lesser extent Fianna Fail. The tallies from across the country point up an exceptional job being done on the ground by Fianna [...]
