One of few journalists to call CU for Dana in 1999 has called the third seat in the Northwest euro constituency for Libertas leader Declan Ganley: Ten years ago this week, I was the only reporter to ‘call’ it for Independent candidate Dana Rosemary Scallon in advance of the Connacht-Ulster European election. Fianna Fáil and [...]

This is the second in a series of posts looking at who would or would not keep their seats if an election was called now. With not much local polling to go on this is entirely my opinion and probably wrong. If you have any ideas on it please drop a comment. Galway West

The Oireachtas has today launched a detailed profile based on the 2006 Census of all the constituencies in the country. The information is quite interesting and comprehensive and details all 42 constituencies in the country.

It is probably unfair that she is found out while public finance are in shit-street. Other independents who rejoin or join parties have kept the allowance (at least for a while) before giving it up. But Beverly manages to put such a brave face on these things. FIANNA FÁIL backbencher Beverly Flynn has put herself [...]

Beverly is back in court today to finish up her proceedings with RTE. The court is due to strike out her proceedings with RTE following the repayment of the debts and costs. Speculation in the Sunday newspapers over her return to Fianna Fail even managed to suggest that she will be back in the party [...]

Indymedia is all alight with people cheering on the efforts of protesters who stormed the refinery (one commenter has likened it to 1916 which of course like this was a peaceful protest). With news that a person has be arrested for assaulting a Garda. I have talked in favour of the governments policy before thus [...]

Things have gone a bit quiet here at IE in the last few days, which could be despite or because of the fact that political life has reverted to form so quickly. Nonetheless, it’s been a strange week for the Government even set against the apparently high standards of tolerance shown by the electorate, so [...]

In news that removes one minor headache for the Government, Beverly Flynn (artist’s rendition) announced in Castlebar last night that she has settled her debts to RTE arising from her libel action against them. RTE won’t comment, presumably because the matter has not yet been finalised by a court. But having rejected an earlier offer [...]

When Bertie Ahern made overtures to the effect that Beverly Flynn could be in line for a junior ministry position, some on this site pointed out how unfair many of the less infamous FF back-benchers might find the whole situation. Now it looks like Fianna Fáil’s own man in Mayo, Dara Callarey, is trying to [...]

She will vote in favour of Bertie Ahern this afternoon after reaching agreement this morning. No comment on whether she will return to Fianna Fail, though Noel Whelan on RTE thinks she will. Bertie now has 78 (FF)+ 2 (PD) + 6 (green) +4 (Ind) = 90

It bears reminding that the Mahon tribunal resumes tomorrow. Examine the witness list for a sense of the potential landmines lurking within this evidence. Even if one takes the view that the 42 percent FF vote didn’t care about the underlying issues, other voters care and so do potential coalition partners. So the tribunal will [...]

Whilst looking for something completely different on Google news, I came across this: Cllr Frank Chambers, Fianna Fail candidate, said that Mayo students in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway would struggle to make it home. They are now in “limbo land” over their chances of getting home to vote, he said, and “every effort should [...]
