The cabinet is bare
Resignations from Mary Harney, followed by Noel Dempsey, Dermot Ahern, and Tony Killeen. As Brian Cowen appears to have been sitting on at least one of these letters for over a week, we don’t know the timing. But Mary Harney correctly pointed to the problem with TDs intending to retire from politics — and thus with no electoral accountability mechanism — remaining in the Cabinet. So did she trigger the others? I hope we’re beyond the point where we think constituencies are still populated by slack-jawed yokels who’ll be impressed by a new ministerial Merc, but it’s tough to see what credibility any Cabinet reshuffle would have at this point. Somehow, 5 ministerial resignations in 2 days is not a crisis. Only in Ireland.
