Another day, another confidence motion. Well it may have been if #fgheave was not going on in the background.
If you care to watch the main speeches you can watch Enda Kenny here (with James Reilly his new best friend/wannabe deputy leader sitting beside him) , Brian Cowen and him saying sorry for the government’s part, Eamon Gilmore asking if Cowen had no shame and interestingly enough sharing his speaking time with Ruairi Quinn who was on form.

What motivated the motion of no confidence in the first place? A rush of blood to the head? Kneejerk reaction to media headlines? Sheer stupidity?
Even if the internal crisis in FG had not erupted, the government still had the votes to win. The only effect of tabling such a motion precipitately is to close down any further debate on the Banking reports. Smart move, indeed.
One possible theory: Enda knew last week, even before the poll, that something was afoot and wanted the confidence vote to busy giddy minds with “foreign” quarrels.
P,
I don’t know of any evidence that supports your theory but, unfortunately, in Enda’s case there are lots of precedents for opening the mouth before the brain is engaged.
