It’s been a while since I’ve brought you news on a Bertie earner - being the recession and all I suppose times are tough for the Iar Taoiseach and the way he might scratch a few euro to make up for his pension levy losses.
However news reaches us today of Bertie Ahern’s signing as the newest columnist with the Irish News of the Screws – entitled Bertie Ahern Talks Sport, the column will bring us the opinions of Dublin Centrals’ finest on sports at home and abroad.
‘It’s no secret that I am sports-mad and this column will give me the chance to look at the good, the bad and the ugly of Irish and international sport. Let’s hope I end up writing about Ireland qualifying for the World Cup, winning the Six Nations again and Padraig Harrington lifting a few more Majors.”
That’s code for earners to all the 6 nations matches and a few Major’s so?
And is Bertie the first former prime minister to have a sports column? He says in the press release from the NOTW that he’ll have to set aside his allegiances to Dublin GAA (not so difficult after yesterday) and Manchester United for his new role. His first column will be published this weekend in what Geoff Frazer, the editor of the Irish News of the World says ‘will be an unmissable read for every sports fan in Ireland. ‘

Head over to our T![Reblog this post [with Zemanta]](http://img.zemanta.com/reblog_e.png?x-id=340e1aa9-e21c-401c-b741-bbe2529d27de)
Do the good folk at the NOTW not remember Bertie’s embarrassingly bad performance on The Premiership a good few years back? The Iar-Taoiseach displayed a staggering inability to say anything remotely coherent about the game he supposedly loved.
And seriously, we have to pretend that Bertie has ever shown an interest or knows anything about rugby or golf?
Sigh. I just hope he has a good ghostwriter.
Em… as far as I know, I know it pretty well I reckon – in golf you don’t “lift majors”, you lift the Claret Jug, the PGA Trophy, the US Open or wear the green jacket. You “win” majors and lift, or wear, the respective prize. To say “Let’s hope I end up writing about… Padraig Harrington lifting a few more Majors”, is either very poor grammar or shows a complete lack of knowledge about golf. Neither of which would I put past our Bert.
I cannot wait to see his first offering. I am trying some versions of my own and might share if happy with them. Oh this will be great – going to have to get someone to buy it everyweek so we can all enjoy the insights of our dear iar-taoiseach. Wonder which sunglasses are best for games at croker?
While Mark’s perfectly correct to point out that ‘very poor grammar’ and ‘complete lack of knowledge’ about a subject are the very domain on which Bertie has built a career upon, surely this is what qualifies him perfectly to write for the ‘News of the Screws’ (Ireland!)?
Anything less and their readers would get confused…
This says quite a lot about Bertie. A passion for sport is laudable and if an ex-Taoiseach were to genuinely get involved – say as patron of a sports organisation or chairing some worthy group – or such, then it would be perfectly plausable.
That Bertie – once our chief statesman and chief – would sell his name to a dung rag shows how robust are his ethics. He will probably get the odd call and of course everything will be prompted and fully written up by a ghost writer (poor writer – what he picks up from Bertie will never be intelligible as comment anyway and will have to be composed more or less from scracht) Essentially it is just what I say — selling his name. Shabby indeed.
dis is a great moment for me, a big check every week to add to me tree pensions an de digouts an d’other freebies.
Tanks lads, I’ll see if I can push somethin your way.
Why are we paying for this eegit(who robbed us as Charlie did before him) to have round the clock drivers. The drivers are all gardai who should be on the streets protecting us and all being paid a fortune to drive him and the other ministers around. Let them get public transport or taxis like the rest of us. This would help towards Brian Lenihans 4 billion.

Very interesting article, thank you.
You’ve got a great website at all
Berti Ahern should not be writing for any news paper, the man was involved in a tribunal in this country paid for by the tax payer and he made a mockery of it. He also still to todate cant explain how he was signing blank cheques and had no bank account as the minister for finance ? the man is a crook !
bert the cert a total crook who should be in jail a thief and a liar
Surely Bertie should be Racing Correspondent and tipster seeing as he could, according to his own sworn testimony to the tribunal, go to Manchester and come back with tens of thousands of pounds in cash after getting lucky on the horses. It seems he couldn’t back a winner here though.
The poor bookies of Manchester mustn’t have an arse left in their trousers.
Boycott the rag that employs this gombeen.
