European Exit Poll from RTE /Sindo confirm Strong showing from Higgins and Ganley

Read more about: Ireland     Print This Post

The RTE exit poll with the European Share of the vote is just out at a national level the figures are:

Fianna Fail 23%

Fine Gael 30%

Labour 16%

Sinn Fein 12%

Greens 2%

Ind 10%

Libertas 4%

Socialists 3%

The figures mean that Fianna Fail may not look as bad as thought – though it is as you were with Eoin Ryan waiting to see how he gets on in Dublin. The figure for Libertas when you consider two non-showings for Simons and O’Malley is effectively a confirmation of the strong polling for Ganley in the North/West averaged to nationally. The figure for the Socialists is effectively the same thing, a proxy for support for Joe Higgins. Higgins is on 28% in his local ward out in Mulhuddart while he is running at that kind of level in Fingal – the poll also confirms the RED C view of things over and above the TNS/MRBI view but only for the locals.

The immediate aftermath of the Fine Gael suport level will be joy in the party but questions will no doubt be asked about two things on a national level: the failure (as it stands) to get a second seat out of Ireland West and a rating of 34% after such rage on the doorsteps. Perhaps it is that when voting for Europe people were more comfortable ticking a left-wing box than before. The local picture is that the left has done very wel in urban areas and becuase of the fewer votes needed to keep seats, the rural areas have been kinder to the Fianna Fail party.

The questionmark will hover over Cowen from Monday but it may also hover over Kenny – the media do not want to let go of the figures that have him only marginally more popular than Cowen and the conventional wisdom that 34% is really disappointing when govt are in the mess.

What do we think of Ganley? Well the chairman is polling strong and looks like fighting hard for a seat. Maybe the Mayo news had it right all along.

Would be all the sweeter if it’s at the Cope’s expense.

Hopefully neither Ganley or “the Cope” will get in.

Pity Caroline Simons didn’t poll well – was very impressed with her intelligent contribution to debates and discussions on RTE Radio 1. Ganley should be elected, despite the best efforts of our national broadcaster and print media to demonise the man at every possible opportunity. ‘Libertas’ was born out of necessity – George Lee, on the other hand, is an opportunist. Integrity versus Celebrity.

‘Libertas’ was born out of necessity

Really? Because to everyone else, it looks like it was born from Declan Ganley’s chequebook.

ZeitGeist – Caroline Simons intelligent contribution? Are you kidding me? This is the woman that thought that one of the opposition parties set fire to one of their offices and called Simon Wiesenthal Centre ‘beneath contempt’, getting Libertas into a spot of bother in both instances. The woman who says she’ll reform the Health Service, despite the fact she can’t from Europe. The woman is the closest thing to Sarah Palin in Irish politics.

And if you think Libertas have integrity then you’re in more trouble that most. While all of our parties lie and cheat, they also do other things. Libertas do nothing but lie and cheat. They have all the worst qualities of our existing parties (in a greater quantity) and no redeeming aspects.

Check out some of their slogans, research them a bit, and you’ll see quite quickly they are full of rubbish.
