Alan Kelly becomes third MEP for Ireland South – Lineup almost complete

The most compelling race in the country is over with the victory of Alan Kelly in the race for the final seat. Kelly took the seat in a final head to head with Sinnot by 10,000 votes after Toireasa Ferris was eliminated as ever you had it first on the liveblog.
The MEPs so far for Ireland:
Dublin – Gay Mitchell (FG), Prionsias De Rossa (Lab), Joe Higgins (SP)
East – Mairead McGuinness (FG), Liam Alyward (FF), Nessa Childers (Lab)
South – Brian Crowley (FF), Sean Kelly (FG), Alan Kelly (Lab)
North and West (To be confirmed but projection is) Pat ‘the cope’ Gallagher (FF), Jim Higgins (FG) Marian Harkin (Ind)
Congratulations on a nailbiting contest but it does reopen the debate on the proportionality of an electoral system that has never been more disproportional in this election, allotting Labour 25% of the seats on 15% of the vote – the same as FF – as well as allotting SF zero MEPs in spite of 12% (1 in
voters supporting them and their share of the 1st preference vote actually increasing.
