Alan Kelly becomes third MEP for Ireland South – Lineup almost complete

The most compelling race in the country is over with the victory of Alan Kelly in the race for the final seat. Kelly took the seat in a final head to head with Sinnot by 10,000 votes after Toireasa Ferris was eliminated as ever you had it first on the liveblog.

East – Mairead McGuinness (FG), Liam Alyward (FF), Nessa Childers (Lab)

Congratulations on a nailbiting contest but it does reopen the debate on the proportionality of an electoral system that has never been more disproportional in this election, allotting Labour 25% of the seats on 15% of the vote – the same as FF – as well as allotting SF zero MEPs in spite of 12% (1 in
voters supporting them and their share of the 1st preference vote actually increasing.
