Fine Gael’s European Election Broadcast

Read more about: Features, Fine Gael     Print This Post

Yesterday we got Brian Cowen‘s ‘watch this’ video, today its Enda’s team for Europe. Uploaded last night, it runs through all of the candidates with a narrative and brief piece of Enda at the start.

Fine Gael’s strategy, if it wasn’t clear before is to put the candidate’s front and centre allowing Enda to tour the country and leave the media front-lining to door-steps and the candidates. It is a contrast to Cowen, who still insists on putting himself out there, even though the party probably don’t want that and Gilmore, the only party leader on the posters that I have seen.

Interesting contrast with the FF clip which focused on only one candidate per area and almost ignored Eoin Ryan completely (bar Michael Martin almost mumbling his name when introducing Eibhlin Byrne). And even the pitches appeared disjointed. Byrne telling us that Dublin is the engine of the economy, and we need to develop as a city state? I’m sure that people will make great play of that down the country.

Fine Gael make big play of the EPP linkage (I’ve never been that sure myself that this works so well with people but we keep doing it so there must be some value to it) and also a couple of what sounded to my ears as deliberate references to the Rainbow government (remember that one that didn’t screw up the economy!) and the sly insertion of the by-election candidates at the end. Also, Enda seemed to have more go to his delivery compared to Brian who sounded like he was reading an auto cue that said terms and conditions apply.

Do the parties get another one for the Euros or is it merely one more for the locals?
