Nunn Distances Himself from Libertas’ Campaign

Naoise Nunn, former Libertas director during the Lisbon treaty campaign, has an interesting appearance today in the Irish Times. Despite the party polling at 2% in the latest Business Post poll, the Chairman appears to be hanging his hat on a few high-profile scuffles between his candidates and sitting MEPs to generate profile.

Ganley has his sights on Harkin at the moment in a typically tasteful debate about abortion and euthanasia (why worry about important policy issues when you can head for the red meat?), Raymond O’Malley has his sights on Mairead McGuinness and Caroline Simons has her sights on whomever takes her on (funny pic spotted at UCD on that note).

These fabricated events, aimed at getting a bit of traction on the public consciousness, and the emails from the Chairman – including todays rallying of the troops – are all trying to get some momentum into a six week sprint to get a sitting MEP. The credibility of their Lisbon campaign does hinge on their support at the polls here and that credibility won’t be helped by Naoise Nunn’s willingness to support Lisbon this time around.

Nunn was speaking to Mark Hennessy, and his comments;

“The circumstances have changed: internationally, economically, financially and domestically.

“We don’t have the luxury of doing anything else. I am glad that we had a referendum. We were the only member state to do so, to have a proper debate, or something like a proper debate,” Mr Nunn told The Irish Times .

include an admission of scare tactics and misinformation. He says “on both sides” but the admission that they were using the tactic is quite a serious admission, I would have thought.

    One does not know what NN really meant, but what he said did not constitute an admission “of scare tactics and misinformation” on Libertas’ part. The referendum was not a contest between Libertas on one side and the eurofanatics on the other. I was on the “no” side, but did not follow Libertas’ line. Nor did I engage in “scare tactics and misinformation” but I agree that they occurred “on both sides”.
