Paul Gogarty resigns

From Irish Times

Green Party education spokesman Paul Gogarty has resigned his position in the wake of decisions on education taken at the party’s convention in Wexford at the weekend.

Mr Gogarty is expected to make a statement at lunchtime but The Irish Times understands he has submitted his resignation. He is understood to be particularly upset about a motion, which delegates accepted, to establish a high-level reference group to develop a strategy on education commitments.

In the run up to the last election Paul Gogarty had a 50 step plan on Education. What this does to the Green Party and the government remains to be seen. If he resigns from the party and crosses the aisle the governments majority is reduced but not destroyed. In the last election Paul Gogarty took the second seat in Dublin Mid-West . With Mary Harney stepping down there is probably a second FG seat in it. As it would be unlikely for FF to gain a seat and Labour to run two candidates. It would seem that his seat is probably safe (ish). Barring a Sinn Fein miracle. So I can’t imagine this decision been taken on fear of losing his seat.

Although maybe someone closer to the ground can tell me otherwise.

Simom, FG don’t have a seat here so the gain we might make in the wake of Harney’s departure would be our first seat there.

I think this in part a gesture and in part a sign of frustration on Gogarty’s part that he is not able to make policy in this area himself.

That is indeed true Dan should read my election stats more closely. Although I would wager with Harney going there is two FG seats there maybe at the expense of FF

I can’t see FF dropping that low as to lose their seat completely in what is a four seat. I’m like to see it but can’t.
