How many ministers does it take to drum up Irish business in the Emirates?  At least two.  Micheál Martin is going there tomorrow. Mary Coughlan was there 2 months ago.

The first visit was by Mary Coghlan which primarily focused on Dubai. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are rival cities within the emirates and are ruled by rival families. Abu Dhabi is the capital city and has been asking Ireland to set up an embassy for many years a request which they re-iterated during Mary Coghlan’s visit. We have finally relented and the investment has been made to set up an embassy in Abu Dhabi. This is probably a good move and we tend to do as much business with the UAE as with Saudi Arabia which is where our main embassy in the region is. Michael Martin and Mary McAleese travelled for the opening of the new embassy.

Abu Dhabi’s influence has been growing stronger as they have adopted some of the business friendly approaches of Dubai. Unlike Dubai they have a huge Oil and Gas industry which will allow them to weather the global recession better than most.
