Head over to our T
it is with great regret to here of the death of TONY GREGORY.A man of the people and for the people.why is life so crual he had os much more to offer,R.I.P.
It is with great sadness that I have learnt of the untimely death of Tony Gregory, T.D. I recall him as a dedicated teaching colleague before he entered the political arena when he taught Leaving Certificate history at Coláiste Eoin, Booterstown, in the late seventies. Bhí grá agus ómós aige ariamh dá theanga dúchais agus labhair sé Gaeilge aon uair go bhfuair sé deis a labhartha ar feadh a shaoil.
He stood out as a moral giant among many of his more mediocre peers in Dáil Éireann. His work for the underprivileged people of his constituency and his unflinching and courageous fight against the city drug barons are a lasting testimony to his singleminded concern for his constituents.
Less well-known perhaps was his constant struggle to improve the lot of animals. He showed a rare compassion for the suffering of innocent creatures without voice or vote. Indeed, no other Irish politician has shown such consistent concern for animal welfare since Richard Martin. His lone voice will be sorely missed by all Irish animal lovers.
His was a truly independent spirit. He worked tirelessly for any cause in which he believed, even when his stance was an unpopular one. Most recently, he walked with the ordinary people of North Mayo through Dublin city on a protest march with the “Rossport Five” and “Shell to Sea” group against the combined might of Shell International and most of his Leinster House colleagues.
His passing is all the more poignant because there would appear to be no other elected voice at national level equally independent, sensitive or courageous to replace his in the promotion of justice and truth. Ar dheis-lámh Dé go raibh a anam uasal Gaelach!
