Bonner to Save the Day

The Sunday Times reports that Fianna Fail are looking for “independently wealthy” -haven’t they hade enough of them? – persons to run as second candidates for Europe. They expect them to spend big on themselves like Royston and raise lots too. In other words they are skint.

In Connaught-Ulster the party has set it’s hopes on former Irish keeper Packie Bonner. They worry about Sinn Fein’s Padraig MacLochlainn and with Sean O Neachtain’s base in Galway fear not getting someone on at all.

Yep, they’re skint and they know that no one will be buying a FF raffle ticket between now and the general election.

Unpopular and skint is not a way to boost your vote even if that was from a very low base.
Can we be so certain the ff cannot now do worse than the terribly low level of the last locals. most have suggested it cannot get worse but if you are right about the finance of that party then dare we hope for the situation where two successive poor locals will harm FF such that they no longer become the de facto party. Maybe too much to hope for.

I hope Packie Bonner realises that he will be a sh!t magnet if he decides to spend his money in this election. Wait 2/3 years Packie.

Let’s remember for a moment the climate in the lead up to 2004, everyone was telling us that FG were screwed, that FF were stable that SF, the Greens and Lab were be the big story. Sure FF were running a good number of co-opted councillors because of the end of the dual mandare but they were running loads more long standing local vote getters. And they were butchered!

This time they have fewer seating cllrs and considerable more newbies. Against the backdrop of a reduced national poll rating FF HQ will be asking seating cllrs (who may have squeaked back in 5 years ago) to share some territory with the new folks. Some chance.
