I live in Dublin 15 I am very worried for my fathers health, he is 59 and I am 1 of 5 children. I hope you can understand how upsetting it is to see a man like my father to be in so much pain, and with no help from either medical professionals ( It isn’t the doctors or nurses fault they have a shortage of staff to attend to these problems ) or the social welfare do not help either, as we speak, his bills keep pouring in the door and yet he has been told not to work until his illness clears. Below I have outlined all our problems about my father and hope you can help me in some way.
My problem is probably very small to others, but it’s huge to me.
My Father , has just recovered from Throat Cancer, still having routine checks for this.
He also has type II Diabities.
He has been complaining of pins & needles & Numbness in his hands to the Diabetic team in the Mater almost 2 months now & a letter of urgency was sent to them ( Dr. Firth’s office ), by our family GP ( Dr. P. N Fitzgearld ) over 2 months ago. This pain had to be bad, as my dad would never go the doctor, he hates going.
2 weeks ago, my father went back to out GP to say the pain was still there. He sent him straight in for further tests and they kept him in. Turns out that my dad was having Angina attacks ( which follow on with a massive heart attack if left untreated. They kept him in for 1 week and put a stent in his heart. He was supposed to have a visit from the Diabetic team while he was in the Mater hospital, but they failed to show up, to see to the trouble he is having in his hands & now has travelled into his feet.
They did say that the Friday they took my dad down to have his operation, that a team did come up, but myself and my mother were there all the time, & we never seen them there.
The doctoe allowed my dad go home then on the Monday evening & said he would most likely be best off going private ( my dad has VHI cover ), as there are over 30,000.00 people with Diabeties ont eh North side of Dublin, but what I am concerened about is MY DAD.
He was told not to work for 4 – 6 weeks, he is a taxi driver and he has big bills to pay, and the social welfare are not forth coming with any form of help either. Myself and my brothers have helped out as much as we can to ease his bills. For the doctor to ask my dad to go private in order to hurry his meeting with the Diabetic team in the Mater is disgraceful, what does he pay his VHI for, when he cannot get an appointment, even after his GP has sent a letter of urgency to the clinic & he has had a stent put in, in their hospital. I’m appauled to say the least, i cannot understand hoe this is able to happen. My dad is not a complainer and has always worked hard for anything he has.
Basically, what I am asking for, is your help, to have my dad seen to about this numbness in his hands. They did say it’s all to do wiuth the nerve enedings, but you & I both know, that numbness and pins & needles in the hands or arms, is all connected to the Cardio Vascular system. I work in pharmacy in Mulhuddart now 4 years and I have wroked in Finglas pharmacy for 9 years previous to this, so wroking along doctors, I have a lot of knowledge in this area, but I am helpless. No one will listen to me. I hope you can understand that I am broken hearted looking at my dad like this, he is the man that looked after all of us when we got ill, and now I would love to help him out now it’s him that’s ill.
He had also written a hand written letter over 7 months ago, requesting a transfer to Blanchardstown Hospital Diabetic clinic and still has heard nothing back. The reason for this request was with me working so close & we live near by, it was a much better and convinient option, plus, there is not half as many patients here, so i was hoping maybe he would get a better understanding in this hospital.
Thank you for taking the time to read my email. I really appreciate it.
