"if the Shannon routes were lost"

I think it's a stupid reason to vote No but that's what he told people.

I can just see it now, the YES side gets a shift on and levels things up in the final week and then the whole thing is lost because of significantly more No votes than the national average in the Mid-West because the likes of Kevin Sheehan (FF and the Chair Limerick County council) called for people to vote No is the Shannon routes were lost.

Will Cowen just expel him from the party or the country?

Garry, sounds like a plan or we could build if we could ever get planning permission.

Garry, we are in danger of having a mutual back slapping contest here :) but i also agree 100% with you. I am pro-european and for closer cooperation but this treaty cant be the way forward. I am amazed at the 1% population argument bandied about by some people. Who gives a sh!t (excusz moi) if it were .25%. You dont have to be spineless to be part of Europe. no point in being diffident and aplogising the whole time for existing.

Jer, I agree with you 100%.
I actually thought - no joking here - that the more interesting poll was the Ray D'Arcy phone-in yesterday which was (a non scientific, I'll grant) 70% no. I really think that D'Arcy is the Irish equivalent of Preoria, Illinois - the bell weather for the middle ground. If his demographic feel comfortable voting no, then that's the direction we're headed.
I'm a no voter. I'm not anti-Europe, I just don't think the Lisbon proposal for restructuring is a good one. I'd be more in favour of a system where we had an upper house of the European Parliament with two delegates per member state and Commissioners appointed, not on the basis of where they're from, but on the basis of their expertise. Wouldn't solve the whole thing, but it would be step in the rigth direction.

garry, interesting point about the half hearted campaigning. if this treaty does go down in flames then some focus will be placed on the decision of govt. figures including an Taoiseach to state publicly that they did not read the actual document. That was so half hearted as to almost amount to self inflicted sabotage.
I think this poll rather than energising the yes side will normalise the no vote and make it a socially acceptable position among ordinary decent people rather than a position for loo lahs. Will be interesting to see will Siptu come out for a straight no over the next few days if the govt. doesn't jump. I think they will probably hang fire now.

I can't understand FG's opposition given that John Bruton was so involved in the constitution and is now an EU ambassador.

Any non-affiliated people thinking of voting no should be made read the section of the Spoofer's Guide to Lisbon about who's on the No side - specifically what a nice bunch they are and how they've been right before.

Idiots vote no.
