*it wasn’t really. Nor the entire media for that matter. It has been de rigeur for defenders of an Taoiseach in recent times to present the media as the enemy here. If it were not for them this would not be an issue, Ahern and his Ministers would continue to govern in their efficient inimitable [...]

Listening to Willie O’Dea on RTE seems that they are blaming the resignation on the fact that the Mahon Tribunal is distracting the government from operating successfully and thus for the benefit of the country he resigned. Interesting way of putting it playing the Martyr card.

Breaking: Bertie Ahern to resign Tuesday 6th of May.
10:30am: Bertie Ahern has announced a last-minute, unexpected press conference to be held before his statement to the Dáil.
Reports on the substance are mixed although many outlets are suggesting that a resignation date, or even an immediate resignation from the leadership of Fianna Fáil, is expected.

I am not sure if ‘the Irish Internet’ is the correct term but it is more than sufficient here for a brief mention of the politics.ie issue. I don’t want to rehash the origins of the story nor can I do much better than Fergal over at Tuppenceworth, Worldbystorm at the Cedar Lounge in encouraging [...]

With all the weighty constitutional matters of the week, something on a lighter note: UK foreign secretary David Miliband says that an unnamed foreign minister told him during the EU ministerial in Slovenia last week that he had lost his bags in transit at Heathrow T5. The media seem to think that it was a [...]
