Niall O Brolchain the new Michael D

While the Indymedia commenters go on about the Fianna Fail-Green Party coalition openly colluding with these US torturers and murderers, in their protest that involved putting Liam Mellows in a orange boiler suit, Niall O’Brolchain is in one of the pictures next to Michael D. What struck me about this is Labour are having problems with finding a replacement for many of the older TDs, such as Michael D. Also many people in the Green Party are not that happy about the Green Party jumping into bed with Fianna Fail. Considering the Niall spoke out about Green Party members having to vote in the Seanad for Fianna Fail back in July I would wager he is in the not happy camp. Will we see him jump ship to Labour any time soon? He would certainly be able to carry alot of Michael D’s personal vote.

I think it might be more that Niall would see himself as hoovering up much of Michael D’s personal vote anyway and as a Green would be more transfer friendly than whoever Labour end up selecting as Michael D’s replacement.

I got this on a Google Alert and decided to respond.
Nobody could ever replace Michael D. He is a national treasure.
Certainly we have a lot in common, especially in relation to our views on foreign affairs and human rights. I was talking to him before the photo was taken. However, I am my own man and so is he.
Interestingly, very few people on indymedia criticise Michael D for the positions he takes despite the fact that they are the same in many cases as the ones the Greens take.
Anyway Dan is correct. While I am certainly not happy with a lot of the compromises made by the Green Party as a result of going into Government, I am a Green to the core and will not be jumping ship.
I will either win a seat for the Greens in Galway or get thrown on the political scrapheap.
While the Greens may have made compromises we have not changed our positions. There is a big difference.

    Christ, I’m correct about something?

I think the interesting thing about Galway West last year was the complete misstep by Catherine Connolly in running as an independent instead of waiting until the crisis point actually arrived of Michael D stepping down and if it was loaded against her then going independent on the basis that she had been a standard bearer and was being denied the chance to run by a local party content to view the seat as a the personal possession of a family. Of course that in part is the issue that Cian has covered in his post.
