Clare FF Cumann Votes No Confidence in Bertie as he Rules Out Government Intervention on Shannon

Last night the Ennis number 1 Cumann voted a motion of no confidence in the Taoiseach following the handling of Aer Lingus’ decision to pull its Shannon-Heathrow slots.
The Ennis Number One Cumann is accusing Bertie Ahern of failing to provide political leadership following Aer Lingus’ decision to end services between Shannon and Heathrow.
It is also accusing him of failing to protect the social and economic fabric of society in the west of the country.
Speaking for the first time last night Bertie refused to intervene in what he says is a commercial decision although it is imperative to maintain connectivity with Shannon. It is no surprise the Taoiseach has left it this late to enter the debate, with most of the heat having disappeared from the issue. The move by the Ennis Cumann, while uncomfortable, are not likely to precipitate a revolt among members of the FF parliamentary party, not least because of the work whips are doing in keeping unhappy TDs onside.
