Broughan Will Not Contest Leadership

Read more about: Uncategorized     Print This Post

Tommy Broughan has just issued a statement. He will not be contesting the Labour leadership, looks like Gilmore will go unchallenged come noon on Thursday.

Deputy Broughan commented, “I wish to thank all my family, friends, supporters and colleagues in Dublin North East and many other parts of Dublin and Ireland who have urged me to take part in the Labour Party leadership process. I did not believe that it was possible to mount a substantial enough challenge in the available time and circumstances of the aftermath of the recent General Election. I hope the leadership selection process will result in a re-energised and stronger Labour Party.”

The Irish Labour party, where the best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.

I think this stores up trouble for the party as those who will be oppose to some action or direction that Gilmore takes will be able to claim more support than they actually have a as result of there being no contest. I think that Broughan know his viewpoint was much more in the minority that they make seek to protray it in the future. To paraphrase that old saying about being a fool, better to be thought lacking in support than to stand and remove all doubt.
