Broughan to say something “shortly”

Sources are claiming that Tommy Broughan’s statement on the Labour leadership race is on the way “shortly”.

Broughan has been expected to make his position clear today but so far things have been exceptionally quiet. It looks as though his statement will come after 5PM which should give him the top-spot on RTÉ’s 6.1 News, especially if he decides to contest the leadership against Eamon Gilmore.

Should he run there will be around four weeks of campaigning with the ballots closing on October 4th and a leader being announced on the same day. If he decides not to run it makes it extremely unlikely that Gilmore will need to face anyone for the position and will automatically be deemed leader this Thursday when nominations close.
