Surely it will be one of the two cabinet ministers.

I think Gormley will be the obvious favourite – I would have put Boyle down as a primary challenger too had he retained his seat, but as it stands I think Ryan is probably the next most likely to go against Gormley.

I wouldn’t be surprised, however, if Gormley pulls off a velvet revolution and takes the position unchallenged – after all the party could be keen to avoid any infighting so soon after getting into office and most of the other TDs might feel like any bid would be useless against an “elder statesman” like Gormley. Ryan and Cuffe etc. might accept some nice positions for their support, just like O’Donnell and Parlon did in the PDs.

As my girlfriend pointed out, wouldn’t it be funny to have Gormley as Tanaiste after him being the one to pip McDowell to the last seat in Dublin South East too? Talk about getting the ultimate political revenge for the PD slur document he railed against during the Rumble in Ranelagh!

Michael McDowell. He is looking for a job. With Trev set to nominate Bertie for Taoiseach, after spending 2 years trying to ensure he is brought to justice for being as corrupt as his mentor, surely the Greens can also forget their disagreements with McDowell.

If the election were today, Gormley would get it. I think by September, though, they’ll have calmed down and will make Ryan leader.
Don’t be surprised if the sight of a cabinet seat makes one of the others run “in the interest of having a competition”.

    John Gormley.

Gormley, but he won’t be Taniste yet. Cowen will be Taniste until Bertie steps down in 2 or 3 years time. Just makes transfer of power easier and denied Greens being Taoiseach while leader is being sorted out. Then, when Cowen is in, Gormley may become Taniste.

Dont count on it, I have heard rumours that Cowen is unsure of whether he wants ot be Taoiseach or not. He is considering not standing for the leadership post allegedly. This would mean that Dermot is likely to be in Justice and prime position to challenge for the top job.
