If you are thinking of donating to a charity this year you might consider the Kerry Rape Crisis Centre for their support of a victim of sexual assault subject to horrific community bullying in Listowel.

In a way makes sense. Major backlash against media and PD’s in this election. As I stated before change of government wanted but change of FF partner. Green safer option than Labour. Less seats, less ministries, smaller party. No experience of government and they want it. If they pulled out at any stage, FF could survive, but with Labour couldn’t. Major swing from left parties tonight, anyone know why? (bar not having any realistic economic policies). It was the economy. Probably always will be. Anyone see government in our time without FF?
I don’t know if it’s possible to speak of a European mood but look at the French results a few weeks ago — an overall move to the right, and a major squeeze on the smaller parties. In the first round of the presidential in France, the 3 mainstream candidates got around 75 percent of the vote, a huge increase from 2002 and a big squeeze on the “fringes.” And in the 2nd round, the right came out stronger. It contains both elements of what happened yesterday.
Government without FF? Hard to see without a dramatic change in the dynamic of Irish voting patterns and it’s going to take some big external shock to force that. I think at this point Bertie could shut down Mahon and no one would bat an eyelid.
On the French election the squeeze on small party candidates was more due to the experience of the previous election where people thought they could place a conmscience vote in Round 1 and got Le Pen in Round 2. The odd system in France forced them to be careful in Round 1.
I’m not sure there are global Left-Right swings. I think incumbency and faitgue are more important (admittedly not this time!)
more sense for them to go for 2 ministries
