TD Teachers

Read more about: Education     Print This Post

In the last few days there has been much talk about TD still being paid for being teachers even though some of them have not taught in decades. Indeed some of them like Finian McGrath use the money they get as a political donation. Why should he simply due to his previous job get extra government funding? And as for the greens idea.

Mr Sargent added that if his party got into government, TDs would have to resign from their teaching posts after five years.

If they were working as an engineer would they keep their job for 5 years? No of course not TD’s are well paid jobs why should they be given a safety net? And as for Mary Hanafin saying

Education Minister Mary Hanafin says she won’t give up her teaching job because her old school would lose the post as a result.

What bloody use is the post now she is not there.

Typical from the Greens to be honest, totally out of line with the pulse of the nation

For the past few days we’ve been talking about trying to increase the number of teachers in the country and get classroom sizes down. And what are the Greens proposing? A law forcing teachers to retire.

Typical. Thank God for Mary Hanafin. She’s committed to improving the teacher/student ratio and she’s even willing to hold down 2 posts to do it.

Hanafin is in touch with the 1980′s. We don’t need her back in the classroom and she can inflict less damage as a minister by doing what FF do so well.

And that thing they do so well is called Jack Shit.

As for the Greens they want us all to be middle class and live in Ranelagh.

Oh for heaven’s sake. In 2002 the government made a commitment to reduce class sizes in primary schools and they haven’t achieved it yet. According to INTO “currently, a quarter of all pupils in primary school are in classes of greater than thirty. Less than fifteen percent are in classes of under twenty. Ireland has the second highest class sizes in Europe at primary level.” INTO organised the meetings of parents to discuss the class size issue in Feb and March. Only after that did Bertie promise to providing at least 4,000 more primary school teachers. Then, during his Ard Fheis speech he promised tax cuts galore. Promises, such as increasing the number of teachers, can only be achieved once the economy is strong enough to justify the expenditure.

Is it beyond the realms of possibility for Hanafin to stand down as a teacher so her post could be filled by a new graduate who would actually teach kids?

What kind of hold is she using? I’m sure the WWF would be interested.

It’s stunning that teachers can take years off their jobs and then wander back when ever they want as if they never left!

It’s a disgrace that junior teachers can be left in temporary positions doing their jobs well for years until the original teacher decides their other career isnt working out so they want to fall back to teaching making the temp unemployed!

It’s a scandal that they can get paid while not doing their jobs!

It’s a crime, moral if not legislative, that members of the government take part in this swindle!

Mary Hanafin is in my constituency and I certainly wont vote for her unless she resigns as a teacher before the election.
