Internet users won’t vote

So say Atomic, who Fine Gael are using for their advertising brilliance this election.
From the IT yesterday.
Stephen Quinn of Atomic explains: “Online will be a small part of the campaign. Online is cheap, but the people who are looking at it aren’t likely to vote on election day.”
Head over to our T
If you dont bother with the web then of course they wont vote. He has got it backwards. If you bother doing a decent job of convincing voters online then you won’t get benefits. They are not all by definition non-voters. Being ignored it likely to make them so though.
I strongly disagree with the idea that people using the net won’t vote but there again who is listening to me in this campaign.
I’ve been saying it for years, if you ignore people especially younger people who tend not to vote when they are young, they sure as hell won’t give you as far a shake of the stick when they get to their 30s and have mortgage as they will to the people that did take them seriously when they weren’t voting. It is false economy especially when net activity is so comparatively cheap compared to billboards and bus shelters. But there again the advertising execs aren’t going to be going on golf outings with the lads from youtube or google.
Jesus!
These fuckers must thing that people only use the net for BEBO and porn…
OK, they’re half-right, but still…
Well Martin Cullen might have had a far easier time re: eVoting if he had spent the same amount of money on a web based, secure eVoting system. Alas no, we procure defunct machines, rejects from the Dutch system. Its ok though, because we can always use our pencil’s. Peann Luaidhe!
“Alot done, more to do”,”The best is yet to come”.
“Well Martin Cullen might have had a far easier time re: eVoting if he had spent the same amount of money on a web based, secure eVoting system.”
He would have had to spend a lot more than that to procure a “web based, secure eVoting system”, and he still wouldn’t be able to use it without a constitutional amendment to remove the requirement for elections to be held by secret ballot.
What Stephen Quinn of Atomic meant to say was “Online is cheap, but we’re certainly not, so you’d better hope the internet is ineffective as a communication tool, or I’m out of a job…”. Anybody got a paper encyclopaedia to look up wikipaedia? I wonder what it says.
The internet is a great leveller – something we badly need. The main parties each have EUR3.5M to spend in advance of the election. Votes can indeed be bought, but usually not on the internet… I did a piece on this in my first blog a few days ago.
Anyhow, I hope Atomic are wrong. As a candidate in Cork SW, we just put hours of precious time into making podcasts, and I sure as hell can’t afford to convert them into cinema adverts!
It was a sad day when FG HQ decided that paid for consultants such as Stephen Quinn of Atomic and the other American pollsters, offered better advice then they’re own internal committees but then I wasn’t charging my ‘professional’ rates so mine and other’s advice was listened too, acknowledged and promptly forgotten. The net result is that FG are two to three years behind the ball and until there are organisation changes in Mount Street, likely to remain so in the area of IT E-Advocacy.
Quentin, you’re on the right track but just remember that the time for making podcasts, youtubery or others is either early in the morning or late at night, once you’ve left the canvassing behind for the day. Short, sweet and to the point – Ryanair adverts work because during lunch you have that 5 or 10 minutes to search and perhaps book the flight. Be genuine, be realistic and be short and you’ll touch the pulse of the celtic cubs otherwise you’ll be out of sync and very definitely seen as such.
Only saw this now. Fucking idiots. Funnily enough you’re right Braz about the Fine Gael and Irish mentality. Hire in an outsider who charges extortionate fees and they’ll be listened to. “Sure if they charge that much, they have to be right.” “No no it is not a bug, it is what they call a feature.”
Damien, if you only knew the half of it! Anyone take a look at the http bar in the finegael.ie site lately for instance.
yeah what is the story with that braz? Didnt pay the hosting?
Well done FG, there’s another vote you lost, you dolts.
Quentin, by proving he has a clue, is a front runner for me right now in Cork South West.
As usual, the connected internet is the lowest concern of politicians. Why communicate, when you can print non interactive, ‘Policies’ and ‘Contracts’ without bothering with interacting with the public. I’ll bet less than 1 politician in 10 even reads email.

pity there is no e-voting system in Ireland … if not for any other reason but to let me cast my vote in May … I am going abroad for business and holidays but my citizen’s conscience is giving out to me … not voting is giving someone I do not support a better chance of victory … but then … there is no even voting by proxy here.
