… for the election. Michael O’Neill is set for release on May 17th.
Perhaps the Minister of Justice should reopen the case and get the necessary witnesses – who were intimidated by the IRA – to sustain a revised charge of Murder, which is what happened.
Well Sinn Fein would want to make a great celebration of the release of one of their “political prisoners” (aka violent murdering IRA scum to the rest of us). If the release happens in the 24 hours before the election then no party political news coverage is allowed. Sinn Fein won’t get their free air time.
Isn’t it amazing how the release of a member of Fine Gael, Fianna Fail, PDs etc early from jail would be considered a political disaster for the party. However for Sinn Fein the early release of one of their many criminal members is considered a cause for celebration and appealing to their support base.
You should get early release only if you’ve earned it and not simply because you haven’t committed any more crimes while inside.
It should be up to the widow of Detective McCabe and the Garda Siochana to decide if the murderer O’Neill should be eligible for release.
But I still think the case should be reopened by Michael McDowell.
Adams & McGuiness, of the IRA, would be unlikely to risk having their bully-boy associates threaten the witnesses a second time, with an election in the balance.
And it might be an appropriate time for the Minister of Justice to change the law -to allow Polygraph Tests in cases of murder/manslaughter following IRA robberies.
I reckon Sinn Féin need votes from more than just their fan base down here to get a decent result in the Dáil election. For that reason I think the publicity surrounding his release may actually hurt them, reminding people who thought about handing them their transfers just exactly what Adams & co really stand for.
I also reckon the news is more timely for their campaign up north than it is for down here. Funny how a date was announced bang on polling day.
That’s a very good angle JL, I actually agree with you in hindsight- and if you’re right that’s some quality cute-hoorism!
