PD’s behind UW?

From Ireland.com

Mr O’Gorman said he would work for the establishment of a university for the south east region. He said he believed the upgrading of the Waterford Institute of Technology was a “vital component to the revitalisation of County Wexford.

County Wexford has one of the lowest levels of uptake of third level education in Ireland. I believe that the absence of a university in the region is a significant impediment to the economic and social development of Wexford.

A University in Waterford has been on the wish list of the South East for a while now. With a report in 2005 stating that it would generate 2,000 jobs and €96 million for the local economy. Is this a serious proposal or is it just parish pump politics. And do we need another University in this country?

Thank God. A thread not about Kenny and McDowell being racist.

Awarding the status of University should be based on capability of the institution not electoral advantage. DIT is well ahead of the RTCs. When it moves to its new campus it must surely be upgraded.

Also when (if ever) will the 7th Amendment (I think it was the 7th) of the constitution passed back in the 70s be implemented and the right to vote in senate elections given to the newer universities like DCU & UL? The people voted for it but no party seems willing to take on a couple of elitist senators who have more say over democracy in this country than the voters.

agreed simon, the seanad should be reformed or scrapped.

I am not opposed to another university but if its for the SE it should be in a city and be the focus of a regional infrastructure and enterprise development plan helping to enhance the local business in the area etc.

Do we have the resources to fund one? We should it is an essential element of keeping an economy like ours afloat.

Dublin does not need another University as it aslready has 4. for a pop of circa 1,000,000 that’s one for every 250,000.. in the S.E we have a pop of circa 500,000 and no Univeristy. This is way past time and should be delivered now… Numerous independent reports have backed this up such as the A&L Goodbody report.
