[...] There is a growing realisation about the use and potential for weblogs and social networking tools (e.g. Flickr or YouTube) in the mainstream media. Today’s article, ‘Web-based politics and democracy for the 21st century‘ in the Irish Times by Karlin Lillington is just the beginning of what will be the most Internet savy General Election. Whether it is going to be influenced by US style e-campaigning, Irish-centric political forums, political games or doorstopping politicans and then YouTubing them is open to debate.
Thanks Lads,
I've changed Zack's name to his correct spelling and added links to his bio and blog.
Dan - I particularly agree with your idea on election cycles as periods of time where great leaps can be made with relevance for citizen involvement.

Really good bringing together of some of the impactful aspects of election 2006. I wonder to what extent we can get to the level of interaction seen in the US. In the just last week, I noticed that the FF site hasn't even got an up to date list of their candidates online and the FG site lacks an RSS feed. Election cycles with their warlike intensity are opporuntities to make significant leaps forward in the relevance of citizen involvement.

Where will our George Allen moment be in election 2007? Anyone interested in the doorstep challenge?

And all the best people spell their names with a 'K'!

Brilliant and informative post. Zack Exley spells his name with a "k", not a "h", though (I had to find *something* wrong with it!).
