If you are thinking of donating to a charity this year you might consider the Kerry Rape Crisis Centre for their support of a victim of sexual assault subject to horrific community bullying in Listowel.

polls are a pain in the ass – they seem to have become a substitute for decent journalism
it saves them researching a few good stories
not a dickiebird tomorrow in the sun. rags i bet, on the exploitation of the mushroom pickers in monaghan a grant aided company paying two three or four euros an hour to irish and foreign nationals – no holiday pay …..
when the workers ask what about the minimum wage they are told ” you know where the so-and so gate is
what a kip of a country that allows this to prevail
its rte radio and tv that produced this story
wheres the inspectorate from the state that was to be enlarged to catch these scumbags ?
not a meg out of any politician either …..it says a lot about them
actually I think the greens posted a press release on it. oh wait no that is about chemicals in mushrooms http://www.greenparty.ie/news/latest_news/sargent_questions_mushroom_practice
Polls are becoming a bit much these days but taken on the whole they are very interesting but single polls are not really. it is cheap populist journalism most times. But hey first rule of media “give the people what they want”
simon
thanks for the tip about the green party and the spraying of mushrooms
i read that and anyone interested in food production would be too.
we need to hear if this is the usual practice and where are mushrooms on sale that
are not sprayed
it is the same company paying way below the minimum wage by the way, the workers spoke on pat kennys show interviewed by dermot boucher -hayes
some worker spoke of the effect the spray on the mushrooms had on their skin and how it caused coughing.
if they wanted to protect their hands they could buy gloves on the premises for 7.50 a pair out of their lousy wages – not really a runner -at two euro an hour
i must say although im a labour voter im liking the greens more and more
“i must say although im a labour voter im liking the greens more and more”
So am I, but are they an environmenalist cult though? They need to rationalise a lot of their environmental policies. Its not healthy for people to be obsessed about the environment above other social issues, although I respect that the 6 GP TD’s are good all around (outside of their tactics against the war in Iraq in the Dáil ie. putting up posters although its not allowed).
But polls are still legitimate news in themselves because they let us gauge how well the parties are doing at communicating their respective messages to people.
“(outside of their tactics against the war in Iraq in the Dáil ie. putting up posters although its not allowed)”
That doesn’t ring a bell – what posters are you referring to?
Encouraging news today from Galway West in a TNS/MRBI poll indicating Grealish (PD) will hold the PD seat here with 9% of the vote and heavy transfers from FF. 37% of Labour’s transfers are going to O’Brollcháin but FG voters are steering clear of the Greens. In fact, many Blueshirts are again transferring to the PDs, presumably still fearing “Single Party Govt” despite FG assertions that it already exists following Bertiegate. Either O’Brollcháin, FG or FF will win the last seat. FG vote down to 15% from 17% in 2002, FF vote up 6% to 48%. One proviso though: It would be very wise of the PD not to stand a second-candidate here because the Green is only 1% behind Grealish. They ran 3 last time and it worked, but O’Brollcháin was weaker then. My prediction:
2 FF, 1 Labour, 1 PD, 1 Green.
Confirmation of FG’s increasing irrelevance.
I would be inclinded to believe you Brian. Also Brollchain is mayor now. A year of high profileness will put him over the top.
The transfer patterns are as follows according to the poll:
Fahy to Grealish: 24%
O’Cuiv to Grealish: 11%
Crowe to Grealish: 3%
Healy-Eames (FG) to Grealish: 26%
Michael D (Labour) to Grealish: 11%
Ó Ceannabháin, Colm (Sinn Fein) to Grealish: 3%
Walsh (FG) to Grealish: 9%
O’Carroll (SF) to O’Brollcháin: 7%
Connolly (Ind) to O’Brollcháin: 11%
O’Cuiv (FF) to O’Brollcháin: 7%
Fahey(FF) to O’Brollcháin: 3%
Grealish(PD) to O’Brollcháin: 7%
Healy-Eames(FG) to O’Brollcháin: 3%
Michael D (Lab) to O’Brollcháin: 37%

What’s a voter to do? It seems that no matters what happens “the party of corrupton” cannot be removed from office no matter what wrong doing is exposed, I despair when I see the results of these polls, only because I strongly believe that some day the people of Ireland will wake up to the folly of their ways do I continue to vote.
