This isn’t not good news really. FinFacts reports that the EU is now 56% dependent on foreign fuels, up 2% from 54%. Ireland is at 90% dependence behind Cyprus (100%), Portugal (99.4%), Luxembourg (99.0%), and Poland (94%).
The data is to 2005, however last week’s EPA report seems to suggests we rely on 73% foreign oil and gas in 2004.
The differene appears to be level of imports (used in the report cited by FinFacts above) and level of use of those imports in the EPA report. The EPA policy recommendations are interesting to read and compare with party policy.
Note to Bertie: Send Vladimir someshamrock on Paddy’s Day, and perhaps a tie at Christmas too.

Ya I guess FinFacts facts is about fuel. Where 10% would be irish peat and kinsale gas. While the EPA would include peat, gas and wind hydro etc.
Most of our gas comes from the North sea. pretty much Scotland. Maybe Gordan Brown should get the shamrock.
It is infuriating that we could be world leaders in research into wave / tidal / wind yet the government has completely moved against these areas.
