Very interesting, the three candidate strategy was bloody odd at the time, as one of the candidates was a former mayor of Galway, and he was the one who was widely expected (by many in the party, including me when I was a member) of being elected.

Not sure if that strategy will work now, and I doubt Grealish would tolerate it. He had a thriving business, and gave it up to focus on politics fulltime. It’ll be interesting to see how he does, but he would be the fourth safest seat in the party (after McDowell, Harney and O’Donnell), Bobby Molloy is still a big character in Galway, I’m sure he’ll be rolled out closer to the election.

Certainly not good news for McDowell, and explains much of the Greens’ recent attention on the PDs.

There’s a much simpler explanation than that – McDowell and Gormley are bitter constituency rivals and the latter never misses the opportunity to have a go at the PDs.

it wasa an interesting strategy alright but very risky. they do acknowlege that in the piece though. In 2002 a Galway Advertiser poll showed Bobby Molloy in danger of losing his seat, followed some months later Mr Molloy’s retirement from politics. It forced the PDs to re-think their political strategy but many considered them dead in the water. Lazarus like though, they staged a major fightback, narrowly winning the last seat at the expense of Fianna Fáil’s Sen Margaret Cox.

Heard in 2002 poll in Galway Advertiser that the PD seat would be lost in Galway West in the election too. However, in 2002 the PDs had a 3 candidate strategy. I recommend it be reactivated just in case.
