He said in the interview that he bought the house afterwards.

I’ve been wondering afterwards about Bertie’s comment about buying his house later for 200K, when he went for the mortgage did he let the bank know about this sizeable ‘loan’, did he outline his repayment schedule or did he fail to mention it as it was really a gift not a loan? And if he didn’t mention it why isn’t the bank investigating his application?

And was it just me or did it sound like Seamus Brennan on the Week in Politics sound like he was saying ‘this all happened before we had ethics’?

[...] Maman warns the opposition to be cautious tomorrow, something that they have been so far by all accounts. It’s as yet unclear what effect the Bertie speech has had on the wider public, this is something that will become obvious by tomorrow I’m sure. What is already quite clear, however, is that most politico’s aren’t yet convinced on the matter and are still waiting for more. [...]

<blockquote>Although he says he bought a house in the early 90s too so maybe the mortgage was taking a chunk for a while.</blockquote>

The early 90s? Oh, my heart bleeds. ;-)

Sometimes it's hard to figure out what Bertie spends his money on. He says that he saved 50,000 as Lord Mayor of Dublin, but then regarding the loans

<em>It is a debt of honour that I have to discharge. And mm, I made this point, to be honest Brian and I would not have been able to pay it until about 1999 or 2000</em>

even though he'd had a good few years between 1993 and then as TD, FF leader, & then taoiseach. Although he says he bought a house in the early 90s too so maybe the mortgage was taking a chunk for a while.

Bertie signed blank cheques for Don Charleone's Charvet shirts; his Hardi Cock tete-a-tetes with his mistress; his Dom Perignon etc...

He knew that Charlie could not possibly live like that on his Dail wages...

He grew up in a culture of corruption; they were the "Untouchables"; Ned kept the dissenters in line...

So why all the buzz about another few quid?

He makes it sound as though he was the innocent victim of a grasping spouse & the bleeding hearts are already reaching for their handkerchiefs...

Spare us.

At least it stops RTE padding out the 6 o'clock news slot with English football

--- that has to be a major plus!

P, I never thought of that last bit...hmmmm.

I can remember verbatim Clinton doing his spiel on the TV, his arm thumping the lectern as he emphasised his "did not have" part..."I did not...have...sexual...relations...with that woman...mizz lewinsky...I never told anyone to lie!"

I'd say Bertie and Fianna Fáil is in for quite a lot of damage now...sure, FF have had their share of this stuff, but their current leader being perceived as being involved in dodgy dealings, that's got to have an impact of some sort.

I've kinda stopped blogging but I can't stop reading blogs. And I'm probably not qualified to comment but.... being a gal who loves conspiracy theories, here's mine. I reckon that the most cunning of them all realised that he was up against it in the face of opinion polls that just wouldn't turn. He knows that he's working off a very tight time window that involves a budget 2007 giveaway and SSIA kick back. But he needs a neutral to positive underlying trend before he unleshes these double whammys. So why not leak some apparently incriminating evidence about yours truly, wait for Enda & co to run with it, kill the story with an "I'm a humble and modest servant of the state who's as honest as the M50 queue is long. It's that evil Enda n' Pat you can't trust..." He's the only man I know who has the motive, means and access to the information. Time to name and shame the cunning one?

There's a strange resemblance in Bertie's approach to that of Bill Clinton and Monica. Remember when Bill knew there was trouble headed his way for Monica, his first approach was to head to the TV cameras and and try and contain the damage with an "I'm telling you this much and no more" style -- even with an investigative process going on in the background. It's high risk now if anything comes from Mahon that contradicts what he said. As for the source, one theory as Tom said that it's a pre-emptive leak to make it seem like old news when it's officially documented. But we now know that there are 12 potential sources just from the list of payees to the Miriam fund. Darker theory: a certain former minister who knows exactly what went on, given his role as bagman in these situations, did time at the 'Joy for it, and may now be unburdening himself of additional information.

Simon, you have me thinking. Perhaps it was decided that this was a way to discredit Mahon, to discount any revelations that are to come from it in the generel election? Although if this is the case, it is a) playing with fire and b) shows that a certain parliementary body is desperate to remain in their position!

Without naming any names, I have a guess as to who was behind the leak, although obviously I have no evidence (hence the not naming names). It would be my view that this person has the motive, and almost certainly has the means, not to mention past form when it comes to leaks, except, if it was who I believe it to be, the usual source was not used to print the story.
