Innocent until voting Fine Gael.

Read more about: Crime, Fine Gael, Law

Fine Gaels attacks on peoples rights continue. Not content with putting drunks in hospitals into drunk tanks. They are continuing their hatred for the whole innocent until proven guilt thing. Firstly they wanted to tag people out on bail. Now they want limit free legal aid.

From the Western People (also shown in our news section which I presume you all read :) )

A CALL for a change to the rules applying to Free Legal Aid for offenders in criminal court cases has come from Fine Gael MEP Senator Jim Higgins.

———————–

I believe that there should be a restriction in criminal cases on the number of times that a re-offending criminal can avail of Free Legal Aid.

Now despite what Fine Gael may think being a repeat offender is not a crime. If the person is out of jail it is because they have been deemed to have paid their debt to society. When they are brought before the courts they have the same rights as everyone else has including the right to free legal aid. If people are being denied free legal aid and can’t afford legal aid then what hope do they have of a fair defense? Fine Gael are judging them not the judiciary.

There is a reason for innocent until proven guilty, something Fine Gael seem not to understand. I asked this before and I will ask this again, how can people who consider themselves liberal vote to put a party in power that George W Bush(Subs needed for full article) would feel at home in?

As the title in the Western People says, Jim Higgins is calling for this. To the best of my knowledge, it has not been passed by the Fine Gael parliamentary party.

Pieces like this, which seek to define every utterance of a party political as the policy of that party, inhibits public debate, and serves no good purpose.

This country needs greater and freer public debate on isuses, not less.

How can Fine Gael take away the right to defence, I think if they introduce this measure that they will be over stepping the mark by not fulfilling the right of a defence for every person.
