The crime here, or at least brisbane seems to be rising. My friend told me just yesterday she got held up and everyone else that was in the line at an ANZ bank she went to! He had a big steak knife and pulled it out. Luckily the security guards were there and the police were minutes away. He tried to hit the officers and get away but they bashed him and handcuffed him that tight his wrists were bleeding apparently!! Seems to be the thing lately, breaking into banks. Its worse in sydney than what it is in brisbane, but brisbane is getting worse. The gold coast in QLD is rising with crime too. iT'S DISGUSTING! Knowing the financial crisis that we are in at the moment, I guess it wouldnt cease to amaze me but these scum need to be locked up for longer than what they are!! It's like this man recently on the news here, this week that got charged for molesting three boys from the ages 11-16 and gets 3 yers jail but for some reason is only going to be doing 9 months!! It's a complete joke!! what's even more of a joke is how criminals such as murderers are seen as deserving to be rehabilitated!! Are these people just braindead or stupid!? not to realise that the majority of murders DON'T STOP KILLING. I know this based on fact but also my mum graduated and got her degree in criminal justice. Plus a brother who is inspector(going for super intendant).

What I found ridiculous about this article here that states "Taking another’s life whether by the state are by a citizen is wrong."

So it's wrong to take a person's life by state, but not wrong of them to have taken that INNOCENT someone else's they took in the first place!?

Sorry but as long as they have the corrent evidence and there proof is there, they deserve the suffer the same way as they have done to these victims.

Puhlease!!! The only thing wrong here is that article and the people(or person) who printed it.

I have to admit though, I am surprised when I read the crime rate in Ireland is high. I would of thought it would be at least lower than the crime rate here in Australia? Here I was, thinking about moving to ireland in a few years if i liked the place once i visit there end of next year on my holday I'm going on to england.

Does anyone happen to have any info about what its like in terms of living there in ireland? etc. Is there crime rate really high like it says on here? Compared to australia, would it a be cheaper? or if anyone can provide me with a site that I can look up and go to? I would appreciate it

I was considering iceland, but I would rather live in a place little sun than no sun if I can help it.

Think I'm going to have trouble deciding which place that would be better suited to move to. I just need to and want to get out of australia, both my girlfriend and I do!! Electricity is going up more in june and going to be paying more for usage of water. It's so bad here! Suppose to get even more worse than what it is in the next few years to come.

Its the same cr@p here in australia. The government doesn't want blood on their hands, thats what it comes down to!!!!!!! In all honesty, if they don't want to bring in the death penalty, they need to change the law and the murderers get LIFE imprisonment- NO parole or none of this good behaviour garbage! Robbers and rapists should get the very maximum sentence for the extent of their offence/offences. It's just getting ridiculous and unfair!!!!!!!! How many more lives is it going to take before the government wake up and get tough!?

TO CORRECT FALSE information in this article:
At present and for quite some time now (well before 2006!) the judiciary DOES NOT determine the length of time a murderer serves in prison. There IS a mandatory life sentence for murder which Judges are obliged to impose. After 7 years a parole board reviews a murderer's case and the Minister for Justice, Equality & Law Reform has the final say on whether that person is released or not.

[...] Previously I wrote Crime in this country is a lot less then in our neighbours. In Ireland there is 25 crimes per 1000 in England and Wales that is 113 per 1000,Scotland 86 per 1000 and Northern Ireland 69 per 1000. So we are doing something right. Crime is caused by many things much of it is social deprivation. Yet every persons favourite model of social inclusion Sweden has a higher crime rate (based on 2001 figures) and homicide rate( based on 2004 figures Swedish (Irish here)). It also has a lower imprisonment per crime and lower police per person ratios then Ireland.(based on 2001 figures). [...]
