Greens Seek New Communications Manager

Monday, February 20, 2006A ‘rambling’ speech by Green Party leader Trevor Sargent at a pre-Christmas drinks function has led to the departure of the party’s communications manager Steve Rawson after seven years service, the Irish Independent reported yesterday.
Harry McGee reported in the Irish Examiner last month that ‘Sargent made a speech at his party’s drinks reception before Christmas that some took as him taking a swipe at the media. There seemed to be an element of climb-down from the party the following day.’
According to yesterday’s story, Rawson phoned around guests the day after the ‘rambling speech’ ‘to commiserate with journalists for having to endure it.’ The report says the press handler ‘had only that month been promoted to the new post of communications manager (and) and that he would focus on strategic media planning for the next general election’.
Not any more. The Indo reports that ‘the Greens confirmed that Mr Rawson had resigned from his post and that he was being given “a termination payment”. New party general secretary Donall Geoghegan confirmed that a legal document had been drawn up, setting out the terms of his resignation. He refused to comment on the financial terms of the severance because of a confidentiality clause.’
Trevor Sargent takes his job of saving the planet very seriously, so it’s understandable that he should want his staff to be fully supportive of his work. In a memo to party members last year Trevor urged them to ‘never leave home without membership leaflets in your bag or pocket and never to let an opportunity pass without asking anyone interested if they would become involved in making our common future more secure, humane and ecological. Yours for the earth, Le meas glas, Trevor’
The Land Of Ireland would like to wish Steve Rawson a more secure future. The Green Party will be advertising for a new communications manager in due course.
