De Valera to leave post in December

The Minister of State at the Department of Education Sile De Valera has indicated that she will step down from her post in December.

She’s revealed that in a meeting last November with the Taoiseach, when she announced her intention not to stand in the next election, it was agreed she would continue in her post until December 2006.

In the wake of last week’s reshuffle of junior ministers, Bertie Ahern indicated that it was accepted practice in Fianna Fáil that Ministers or junior Ministers would stand down prior to the end of their term, if they had announced their intention not to seek re-election.

This was widely interpreted as a call on Minister DeValera to step aside.

“To suggest the Taoiseach was signalling for me to resign when he talked about the tradition in the party is a complete fallacy,” Minister DeValera said in a statement today.

“The Taoiseach and I are friends for many years and we had an agreement on this issue dating back to November, 6 2005.”
