They do feel pain

The Cabinet pay raises are postponed for a year.  One wonders if they intend to backdate whenever they do implement it.  Interesting that of all people it was Willie O’Dea several months ago who was willing to air the unease about the pay raises.  Also interesting is the role of Garret Fitzgerald as wise old man or at least as important cameo player in the affair, as it was apparently his weekend Irish Times article that provided some rationale for the rethink.

    Sean O Casey wrote in one of his plays re the “Troubles” during the early part of the last century:
    The gunmen are not dying for the people-the people are dying for the gunmen´!”
    well, we are in a new century now and he might have said of the irish health system-if he were to write a new play from the grave:
    “The rich mans is not taxed to sustain the poor-the poor are dying weekly to sustain the rich man.”
    (And the Gombeen politicians of the Fianna Fail Party.”)
