The border campaign

Read more about: Fianna Fail, Northern Ireland, Tribunals

In view of tonight’s news that Fianna Fail have registered as a political party in Northern Ireland, it’s worth reading this Slugger O’Toole post from a few days ago noting the lax regime covering donations to political parties in NI relative to the rest of the UK.  One wonders if the NI registration is really a way for handling those sterling donations that have proven so awkward in other contexts.

It could be but our rules were tightened up recently to cope with this anomoly. Thanks to worries about Sinn Fein using their NI-USA fundraising operation to channel monies to their Dublin setup we tightened rules about donations from overseas.

However I am sure that, as with anything, there are ways and means that have been found around this.
