- Mortgage rate jump tightens screw further on home buyers
- ECB rate hike exposes cynical budget ploy—Boyle
- Interest rate and VHI hikes hit Budget bonus (Irish Independent)
- Interest rate hike wipes out mortgage relief boost Examiner
What they are all saying is that the mortgage interest relief has given people no advantage as they have to pay more interest anyway. Correct me if I am wrong but the ECB was going to raise interest rates anyway.
Dan Boyle of the Greens said, “First-time buyers today are in exactly the same financial position that they were in yesterday.” So if the ECB had increased interest rates anyway, and Cowen had not increased Interest relief, they would be in a worst situation today. The fact that they are in the same position despite an interest rise is actually a relatively good thing.
