The GAA candidates line-up

Read more about: Dublin North, Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, Meath West

Fianna Fail seem to have found a solution to their Dublin North problem, with the replacement of Jim Glennon by John O’Leary, as reported by RTE. In more speculative news, a Fine Gael source in Meath contacted by Irish Election says that Graham Geraghty would be interested in running for them in Meath West, but that party brass are reluctant, feeling that he would get into “too many rows,” presumably off the field of play. As the quest for name candidates continues, they might have to reconsider.

Geraghty’s interest was all over the news this weekend. (Just out of curiosity, was it reported anywhere before the original IE post?) Anyway, the convention is on the 11th of December in Athboy, with Geraghty and others looking to join incumbent Damien English. Enough votes for two FG seats in this three-seater?

How about we give the all-stars seats while we are at it.

Vote Eoin Kelly No 1. Scoring for you.

The new Fianna Fail candidate John O’Leary is an excellent sportsman and is very well known in the area. However, I would be dubious regarding his ability to represent the Dublin North constituents in Dail Eireann. A good sportsman does not (necessarily) a good politician make! Just because someone has an allstars award and is well known in an area does not mean they would be an influential representative for Dublin North. There are more issues to be resolved than sporting issues and I feel that Dublin North needs an all-rounder rather than someone of a specific background such as a sporting background.
