Cowen Urged to Copy Greens

Read more about: Fianna Fail, Green Party, Taxation

I read this today in The Paper Cowen urged to transfer €100m credit card duty to charities:

Thirteen TDs and senators tabled a motion at the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party, last night, seeking to earmark the €100 million raised annually for Irish charities. The proposal is the brainchild of former KPMG accountant David Burke and is endorsed by personal finance guru, Eddie Hobbs.

The first thing that came to my mind was this reminds me of a press release the green party had in September:

One such proposal is the idea to transfer stamp duty on credit cards to designated charities, a proposal flagged at yesterday’s conference. As Green Party spokesperson on finance, I believe that this proposal is very worthy of consideration, and if not included in December’s budget it would be my intention to move a suitable amendment, if a Finance Bill gets to be introduced.

Coincidence? Great minds think alike? Or a rip-off? Or last bell to the ball? It seems to come from this guy. This issue was raised on Irish Election back in September.

It’s not a particularly good idea. Ringfencing tax like that is very poor practice, and should only be done in very exceptional circumstances (like the 0.7% aid thing).

This tax is regressive and should be abolished. Giving it to charity is not the way to put a nice smell on a tax which impedes lower income groups access to credit and debit cards.

So it becomes some form of compulsory contribution to charity. I like to choose the charities I contribute to because I believe too many of them are fat and waste money on non essential elements. So now the liberal dictatorship that run this island will force all citizens to contribute to charity if they like it or not.

Anyway isn’t it nice that there is such an excess in tax that the government can start to give it away to charity. The fantastic motorway network we have linking every major city and town in the country is the envy of the world. And our hospitals are examples of how a 5 star public health system should be run. Class sizes down to 10 pupils with all schools and homes linked with high speed broadband to aid learning. It’s great now that the government has so wisely spent our tax that we can now choose to give €100 million of the excess tax to non governmental organisations to spend on running their businesses.

    Oh wait…….

great points by CF, these shower will manage to screw up the giving away of the money to charity too or else it will take 4 years to complete.

[edit] we dont pay tax to have it given away to charity. we pay it in the name of public service more often than not, welfare, security and social solidarity. at least that is the intention.
