A report from today’s Irish Times states that the Government has refused a request from Senator David Norris to take legal steps to ensure that over 700 graduates of Trinity College, who were disenfranchised because of a misplaced file, can be allowed to vote if there is a Seanad election before June of next year. A file containing the registration forms of over 700 graduates was misplaced so that they were not included on the register for the already undemocratic Seanad elections.
I am appalled at this fiasco. TCD graduates can contact me to check if they have lost their rights to vote. In the absence of government action, as a TCD Senator I will do what I can to allay graduates’ fears, following this debacle.
Stating the bleedingly obvious but at least the TCD graduates will be able to vote at some point the rest of us are out in the cold.
The system for updating the register at NUI and UD are pretty archaic, it takes them 3 months plus to update the registers. Now, I could be just completely cynical but given the size of the electorate in both constituencies and their geographical dispersal it works to favour the incunbents to an incredible degree especially if changes in the register occur at a glacial rate.

In fairness to Senator Norris from what I recall he has been generally supportive of the idea of extending the franchise.
The seanad is an absoulte undemocratic joke and should be radically changed I would love to see a party come out with decent proposels on this. Like have it elected by a party list system by the general population
