Questions and Answers

Read more about: Media

Questions and Answers is supposed to be our prime political debate show. Where the head politico’s come and debate the issues of the day and let the people see all sides of the argument before making their minds up on an issue. So what did we get in last nights issue. Q1: who should take the rap for poor communication between a minister and his servants, Q2:On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of legalised abortion in Britain does the panel feel that such services should be made available in Ireland, Q3: Would giving immigrants the vote shake up Irish politics? Q4: Should every Irish worker be obliged by law to take out a pension?, Q5: What qualities should an Irish soccer manager have?. Now all those are find save the Irish Soccer manager question. Do I really give two flying shits what Ivana Bacik or Martin Cullen think about the Irish soccer team?

No, Eamon Dunphey or Johnny Giles yes, but politicians? We get Ivana Bacik thinks we got rid of Brian Kerr to soon, Olwyn Enright great insight is that the manger needs managerial skills, Martin Cullen thinks he should win the world cup, Caroline Kennedy thinks he should be physic clearly backing Fergus Gibson for the job and Ronan Mullen thinks he should not talk to the media. It is just a load of mutual ego masturbation where the different talking heads try to out do each other in the tragically hip stakes trying to engineer the best laugh from an audience of party heads, where we get Martin Cullen trying to outshine the lot by name dropping that the next world cup is in South Africa, is if knowing that makes him super extra cool. That 3 minutes spent talking about it would be much better spent talking about one of the other issues longer. I never hear Bill O’Herlihy ask Liam Brady after a Champions league match does he think immigrants should get the vote because no one cares what Liam Brady thinks about it , so why would I want Olwyn Enright’s opinion on Steve Stuanton?

I used to watch Q&A but it just seemed to get worse and worse. I think your criticism of the soccer question is unfair because they usually have a short item at the end to lighten it up. If the rest of the debate was probing and enlightening I wouldn’t mind, but that’s rarely the case which is why I stopped watching. Plus usually the panel of experts are as dull as a wet day and I couldn’t be arsed.

It says a lot about Irish priorities when the lead “news” item today was about soccer - a game played by English team members - for the benefit of TV advertisers & the Irish speculative investors in English clubs.

And remember that Bertie Ahern was prepared to blow a cool million on his beloved Bowl, which says even more about the man who was elected to run this country.

Questions and Answers will never amount to anything as long as John Bowman keeps interrupting with his own, highly personal, opinions.
