Independent TDs: The Price to Pay

Just a quickie.
Beverly Flynn:
- Why have RTE not recovered the taxpayers’ licence money it spent in legal costs defending her action, which was awarded against her?
- Could it be that it would be inconvenient for FF, RTE’s real boss, to have her bankrupted—and out of Dail Eireann—together with her critical vote?
- Or is there a slush fund that pays off long-overdue debts of TDs, such as Bertie’s loans of €90,000+?
Quickie 2: Why, if Bertie was skint, as he says, didn’t he collect the €60,000 libel award he was granted some years ago?
Quickie 3: Whatever price of the Independent TDs extract to support FF—it will be too high—because it will be blackmail and will have little to do with orderly government.
Quickie 4: People who have nothing to hide answer quickly, because they don’t have to prevaricate; they don’t preface every other sentence with “And another ting…” or “I can assure you…” or “I know it’s difficult to believe, but dat figure is off de wall…” Or that old gem from the late Brian Lenihan: “My mature recollection is that there is not a scintilla of truth…“
Bertie has a lot to hide. It might not be millions or hundreds of thousands, but he has something to hide. His body language is a give-away. The repetitions—the over-statement of the same immaterial details—”…he didn’t eat any food…he didn’t give me any money…” And the Tanaiste is correct to be hesitant; one cannot govern a country in partnership with a liar, so he must check the facts, not the statements. It would be simpler all around if Bertie offered his resignation immediately, then those with some ability could get on with running the country.

Interesting points, but…there is nothing explicit in our Constitution which prevents independents making whatever demands they see fit on any government seeking support. Indeed I’m trying to recall whether the Constitution gives any specific status to political parties whatsoever. So whether Quickie 3 has any validity in that context I’m dubious. It may appear to be blackmail, but in the context of a political deal it’s hardly worse or better (in qualititive terms rather than quantitive) than any jostling for position as seen within parties by TDs who believe they should get the Merc for one reason or another.
By the by, anyone think Paudge Connollys pledge of possible support was mighty interesting in the context of his belonging to the Technical Group?
I seem to recall that rte have set the lawyers in train to recover their money and to have a judgement registered against Beverly ‘the best one of us all’ Cooper Flynn.

You are correct.
The Constitution never entered my head.
What really concerned me was the probability that Beverly Flynn has been let off the hook to keep the Independent TD numbers up & on side if the PDs walk - which they surely must if Bertie is proved to be another FF liar & cheat.
