Bless this house?

Read more about: Bertiegate

Is this the legs that some were looking for on the ‘Bertiegate’ saga?

RTÉ News has learned that Taoiseach Bertie Ahern may have bought his home from an individual who attended the controversial Manchester dinner at which he received £8,000 while Minister for Finance.

Should be easy enough to find out the market value of the house and compare to others at the time. Stamp Duty/Land Registry records trawling anyone?

Update: Live streaming of the Order of Business can be found here and it’s also on Radio 1 at 10.30am. Bertie Ahern is taking it rather than McDowell as is normal on Thursdays.

The other shoe drops. Or another shoe anyway. The PDs acquiescence was surely conditional on there being no October Surprises.

Will this saga ever end. It was clear that yesterday in the Dail was not the end of the matter. It seems to me that the opposition are giving Bertie every chance to explain this fully to the Irish public and if he dosent I think we will continue to see further revelations over the next few weeks. It hasn’t gone away you know!!!

So what if Bertie bought the house from someone at the meeting? Nothing illegal about that. Bertie stated this morning that the individual concerned was not one of the donors. This story is just more of the demonisation of the personality of Bertie Ahern that the Opposition is resorting to in an increasingly desperate attempt to take power. The public are extremely bored with this issue. The Opposition know Bertie is their prime asset so they are trying to take him out. But in the process they are overplaying their hand. If buying a house is now ‘unethical’ then few will enter politics with this kind of ridiculous intrusion into one’s personal life.
