Should peace in Iraq start from the inside or out (excuse the pun)? But should the outside world not try to apply pressure on the likes of the UK and US to open dialogue throughout the Middle East to solve the quagmire.

Iraq finds itself in a similar position as Lebanon during its civil war. The problem with conflicts especially in the Middle East is that many of the battling groups are fighting as proxies for external parties. In my opinion solving the tension between the US and Iran and the US and Syria may actually might give track two diplomacy a real chance.

If the US and Iran are going to continue using Iraq as a battle ground to discover who rules the roost then any attempt by local proxies will to find peace maybe thrown off equilibrium.

Northern Ireland’s politicians can play a really authoritative role in persuading external parties to enter into dialogue. NI was only sorted out after the UK and Irish Govs decided to start talking with elements that were “undesirable”.

The success of NI gives the likes of McGuiness the authority to teach the US the merits of dialogue. Maybe what is needed is an NI delegation to explain to the US Congress parallels that exist and possible solutions.
