Gov’t to Collapse? - P.ie

Read more about: Bertiegate

Politics.ie is reporting that a Cabinet meeting has been called for this evening, and that the Government is on the verge of collapsing.

Wagger can confirm hearing some of the same rumous in Leinster House. PDs to walk is the word.

Edit by Simon: More sources have said something is afoot.

(2)  Politics.ie now saying that nothing may happen tonight and nothing till the next tuesday in the Dail. But PD’s still in discussion.

Edit by Cian: The Irish Times and The Examiner think they have the story.

It had to be clear to the PDs that part of the FG-Lab strategy was to make them twist in the wind with their acquisence to Bertie’s explanation. I think they were happy for the controversy to drag on and use it to hammer the PDs over and over again on it. Maybe the PDs decided letting that unfold for weeks was too risky. Better take a stand now.

    PROBABLY.

If the PD’s walk FF will do everything it can to continue with Ind. support (because holding an election now is a dead-cert loss, especially if the PD’s refused to support FF in the future).

It’s only if Bertie is forced to walk or if there’s a revolt in FF that things will get ugly; or else the greater public start putting serious pressure on the Government to step down (I’m talking days of protest, Orange Revolution-style… aint going to happen).

I’d imagine the PD’s have privately warned of a walkout but only if things aren’t sorted very quickly, i.e. this time next week.

Im only online now to read p.ie listening to radio this evening. I find it hard to believe McDowell will walk out knowing that FF could go on with ind support. I know it suits him to begin building PD identity but there is no hope for them next time out if he wrecks FF this time.

Im sure the rumours abounded but Adam’s explanation seems apt. If bertie can carry on with support of Parliamentary party and ongoing sympathy from the electorate (an amount of which he is presently enjoying) this may be a busted flush.

P.ie seems certain of the impending resignation of someone so well watch and wait.

I think it will be McDowell to go if Ahern doesn’t do anything in the meantime, leaving it until Tuesday will not be tolerate, and you can be sure the media will go nuts in the meantime, particularly the Sundays.

McDowell wants to stay in Government, surely the case is that for this government to run the full term, AND for the prospect of a FF return (with PD support) after the elections, the only reasonable outcome is for Ahern to stand down.

My sources all evening were watertight, and I stand over everything I’ve written, a combination of texts, emails and voice conversations let to an up to date (live) interpretation of events, by no means complete, but bloody interesting. Things evolve, as do events.

I’d be surprised if McDowell isn’t forced to call Ahern out on this.

Well, looks like my post about snap elections, may yet prove to be right! Jaysus.
I should point out that I was listening to Vincent Browne Tonight on the way home from college, and I heard nothing of the sort on there, although there was quite a kerfuffle over the PD statement McDowell made today.

David how can you be sure what you were told wasn’t just spin?

I dont doubt your sources at all david. I reckon that McDowell’s path is a sure one, he must take a stand but where that leads him only he will know. As I said above you seem certain of a resignation and i have no reason to doubt you.

They certainly do and p.ie has been far better at delivering it than the others so well done.

I wonder though if Ahern has to resign in order to secure a ff/pd return to power. If he stands down Cowen/ D Ahern may well be unforgiving of the (possibly perceived) agressiveness of McDowell.

    Resignation at this stage-likely
    who- i couldnt say.

the more i think about it the more im inclined to agree with my own comment on toms post

I think that post is spot on, i was mulling over precisely those scenarios and couldnt think of another. The PDs are between a rock and a hard place as much as bertie and the more i think about it the more i think it they will walk a tightrope and on wednesday we may well have the same government.”
