Cancer Services Must be Centralised: Harney

Read more about: Fianna Fail, Government, Irish Politics, Progressive Democrats

In light of the pretty awful developments in Limerick earlier this week, Harney has dusted off the Hanely report to re-emphasise how Cancer services need to be centralised and that not every hospital can carry world-class cancer treatment. Although not specifying which centres she was referring to Harney said that closures in local hospitals is ‘inevitable’ and local cancaer patients would be willing to sacrifice local care for ‘world-class’ care.

Its not a surprising announcement as such, since it is government policy, however it does seem a little opportune to capitalise on disfunction in the private sector to make the statement. The HSE investigation has also been refined to public hospitals despite the difficulties being found in private sector. I guess the well-rehearsed old trick from Shannon will be trotted out again, defend local services until the focus dies down.
