Bertie Ahern’s Long Day At Mahon

Read more about: Bertiegate, Fianna Fail, Government, Irish Politics, Tribunals

All eyes on Dublin Castle again today as the extended sitting (were I not a student, I would be quite jealous that five o clock represents ‘overtime’) of the Mahon Tribunal. The plan is to get all of the questions out of the way and leave Bertie be on his way to the rugby see Sarko. With Sipo clearing him for work yesterday and the retained forex expert from Bank of Ireland, one suspects that there may well be lots of innuendo floating around. For a decent breakdown of the four transactions being dealt with today, hop over to the Examiner.

This thread will be updated throughout the day.

Update: It seems Bertie Ahern can not remember buying 30,000 sterling. From RTE

Mr Ahern told the tribunal that he could not be sure whether he purchased the money in one lump or instalments, or even if he carried out the transaction with the bank.

Under further questioning he said that he could have had someone else carry out the transaction for him, as he would have been travelling all over the country at the time on party business.

Plus ça change…our Bartholemew, having found grateful, but disinterested (of course) businessmen to pay for his trips to Old Trafford for so many years, has found a way to get the taxpayer to finance a trip to Stade de France.

Would you buy a used car from him?

So Bertie took the money from Celia’s account that she was supposed to be spending on the house and put it in a locked safe that she didn’t have the combination to while he traveled around the country morning noon and night rebuilding FF and all this to make it more accessible to her? I’m seeing Transport 21 in a whole new light now.

Look in all honesty if he had simply said he didn’t want her spending any money on furnishings without him know exactly what she was buying in case it was too racy or she covered the house in Green and Gold, it would at least have made some sense. But if that’s how Bertie’s brain works then I’m surprised the country isn’t more badly ran that it is.
