McCain Surprises!

Read more about: Uncategorized

In a move that seems to have surprised not just the commentariat but some advisers, McCain has picked Sarah Palin, governer of Alaska, as his running mate. Hugely surprising given she hasn’t been in the Washington inner circle and of course - because she’s a woman! She is not just the first republican female candidate for vice but the first female candidate for vice full stop. And she’s young: 44. The NY Times reports that she is a social conservative - which should please that wing of the party for whom McCain hadn’t been conservative enough. She is also pro drilling in Alaska it seems. Interesting anyway - will she bring in some of the Hillary female vote? Will she provide balance to the notion of McCain as a being to old and of the system? That is, will she steal the idea that only Obama is about change?

Not so. Geraldine Ferraro was Walter Mondale’s running mate on the Democratic ticket in 1984.

It makes perfect sense. She is strong in all the republican areas where he is apparently weak. Most of all she is the perfect candidate to steel those 18 million voters that went for Hillary. Its a masterstroke by the republican strategists. You gotta admire the evil geniuses.

    GerryOS,
I stand corrected, I picked it up from a NYtimes report as the news broke.

Picking Ferraro was seen at the time as a complete Hail Mary pass, will this be seen in this light too one day or as a master-stroke?
