Five Potential Candidates for Labour Leadership?

Read more about: Government, Irish Politics, Labour Party

Gilmore and Broughan were mentioned earlier but today’s Irish Times carries strong suggestion of Howlin, McManus and Burton being possible candidates. It will be of interest to many who happily greeted Rabbite’s departure that Gilmore is not in favour of an ‘alliance of the left’ either, which reads as a pointed reference to Sinn Fein policy. Howlin’s forthright suggestion that he can have his cake and eat it too is very interesting;

Mr Howlin said last night there was no standing order or constitutional impediment preventing him from contesting the leadership while holding the position of Leas-Cheann Comhairle of the Dáil, which was offered to him by Taoiseach Bertie Ahern after the general election.

Mr Howlin, who unsuccessfully contested two leadership elections, said he travelled to Dublin yesterday from his Wexford constituency to take soundings and was “greatly encouraged” by what he heard. “I will be considering options over the weekend and will probably make a decision on Monday,” he said.

    Howlin said on Newstalk this morning during a parade of not yet candidates that he wants to be certain that he is the right person at the right time…

    in other words a coronation? Cant see Gilmore going for that, he has made a lot of early running. I wonder can he resist the temptation with all the ‘big beasts’ out of the way.
